Doing My Best

“I am doing my best”…. I say this phrase at least once a day, to my Type-A boss, who thinks I am a robot, to my employees and colleagues who get stressed over minor things, to my kids who think I am their personal shopper / bank account and to my husband who thinks that because I work from home, I have hours a day to run errands and deal with random service people coming to the house.

I used to try to exceed everyone’s expectations without asking for help. This made me a people-pleaser who used an excessive amount of chardonnay, bags of Lays chips and hours of binge watching tv to escape the pain of disappointing my own impossible standards.

I still like the occasional glass (or bottle) of wine and watching as many seasons of 30 Rock as I could fit into a day. I now try to eat only the snack bag of Lays chips (or maybe 2). The difference now is that I am not trying to please anyone except me. This has not gone over so well with my boss, my kids, my husband or my employees, but that is their problem.

They are now getting used to the new Heather, which may lead to a new job or even a divorce, but I am doing the best I can.
