How a Cat Brought my Family Together

I never saw my three teenagers unless they were hungry or thirsty. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, my kids were in their bedrooms for 6 hours a day with Zoom class, then they would just stay in their rooms until dinnertime. I worked in my home office and my husband split his time in his home office and out in the field. If I exchanged five sentences with my kids each day, I felt like a success.

A stray kitten started coming to our back door every night and my husband started feeding it. Eventually, we let the cat inside and she eventually just stayed. We are not all cat people in my family. My one son and my husband are allergic and we had a dog for 17 years before we had to put her to sleep a few years ago. We were not looking for another pet, let alone a cat.

My daughter named the cat Cannoli, after her favorite food. Although Cannoli was skittish, she won over the hearts of my kids. They actually came down from their rooms and played with the cat. We invested in an air purifier and vacuum daily, which knocks out the cat allergens. I give Cannoli all of the credit for more time with our kids and we are now looking at adopting another kitten. What more can a mom want?
